In one weekend, we hit probably two of the biggest festivals in the state! 9.5 hours of driving in 36 hours...exhausting but worth it! Also, that's a lot of driving for a toddler! She did great but our back seat was covered in toys and snacks when we got back home as she threw things when she was finished! We started at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, where we met Andrea, Tyler, and Camden who were in town for the weekend. The weather cooperated and gave us the only nice weekend of the fall, a cool 80 degrees and no humidity! Arriving around noon we were able to spend a long afternoon checking out everything the fair had to offer. People have raved about the state fair since we moved here. Verdict? It's an over-sized fair. Rides, fair food (ok, there is a bit more unique food where than your typical fair. This is where deep fried butter started after all.), and lots of exhibits. We enjoyed some corny dogs, deep fried cookie dough, some Texas brews, bbq balls, and funnel cake.
Emmeline and Camden did enjoy the farm-store set-up which was very interactive for them.
For Emmeline, though, the highlight was definitely the pig races. I have never seen someone so excited for something! Every race was the same reaction; oh to be a kid again! :)
After a delicious breakfast with Andrea and Tyler the next morning, we headed out to the Renaissance Festival just north of Houston where we met Skee and Michelle. It was their first visit, and my second. Nick is the old pro. We enjoyed some turkey legs (well, Emmeline was not a fan!), a few acts, including the whip master, but in general just wandered around. It's always fun to people watch and check out all the costumes in attendance! Emmeline napped through a majority of it, but she just enjoys being outside. I'm sure her dad will take her to more Renaissance festivals as she gets older!
