4 Years

I feel like I say this every year, but 4 years!? How is it even possible that we have a 4 year old? What a wonderful young lady she is turning into, and we are so proud of her!

Favorites:
Foods: Fruit & veggies are still tops! She'll eat any fruit and most veggies. Loves rice & chicken, pasta (with sauce separate), steak, pizza, sushi. She's a great eater though, and will try just about anything.
Books: non fiction books especially about dinosaurs, chapter books, Pigeon books
Things to do: read, swim, play outside, go to the zoo/bird park/aquarium, play board/card games
Loves: dinosaurs, stuffed animals, arts and crafts, puzzles (100 pieces)

Emmeline has grown so much this year, and yet her character traits remain much the same as from when she was a baby and toddler. She's fiercely independent, determined, and persistent. She loves a good challenge, and prides herself on doing anything that "most kids her age can't do". Whether it's climbing a rock wall, diving to the bottom of the big pool to get rings, or writing her name with correct capital and lower case letters, she won't give up until she's mastered it.

 


She learned to swim this year, and I mean actually swim to the point that I don't worry much about her in the water (unless other kids are with her that aren't as competent). We started her in lessons in February, and by March/April she was swimming half a short length of the pool. Now, in August, seh can swim the whole short length, dive to the bottom, float and swim on her back, and is working on front crawl arms. Well done, Emmeline!

Emmeline also thrived in her first real year of school this past year. She went from a timid, barley 3 year old, to a confident nearly 4 year old by the end. She's learned how to write her first name, can count to 100 by 1s and 10s, recognizes almost all her letters (capital and lowercase) and numbers to 100, does simple addition and subtraction, knows the months of the year and days of the week, and in general just loves to learn. Her biggest gain in school this year was her social interaction. By the end of the year, she had several close friends (Ruby, Poppy, Eve at school, Saya on the bus, and Teddy at our condo), and she is happy to go up to kids at the park and talk to them.

 


Her laid-back, curious demeanor is one that I wish I could replicate for myself. She is intensely curious about the world and often asks very thoughtful questions. Having traveled so much, she loves flags and maps, and dinosaurs are her latest obsession. Best of all, she is the best big sister one could ask for! So caring and helpful with Cora, and quite patient with her too (except when Cora breaks her building one too many times). We look forward to what the year of FOUR brings!
