Door County

In late August, we headed to Door County for our last camping of the year. Nick had never really been to most of Door County before, and it had been a while for me, so it was a fun trip for everyone!

Our campsite backed up to the woods, so the most exciting thing about the trip was the raccoons that visited us nightly. The first night they surprised us a bit, sneaking up pretty close, but we got better at scaring them away on the following nights. Emmeline loved searching for them, though, and she even set up a "trap" the last night with her glow bracelet and an apple from a nearby tree. Sure enough, they grabbed it pretty quickly after she put it out, and then Emmeline chased them back into the woods.

Since we stayed at Peninsula State Park, we were so close to the rocky beach, which quickly became everyone's favorite hang out place. Cora loved to play in the water, which usually resulted in her coming out looking like she went for a swim, and Emmeline loved collecting rocks and beach glass.

We also did some biking and hiking within the park. We hiked on a deer trail, where we learned about deer, did a scavenger hunt, and even saw a deer! We also biked to the sandy beach one afternoon where we swam and built sandcastles.

It was past cherry season, but we were still able to grab some homemade cherry pie, beer, and goodies at the local markets, which also had playgrounds and trikes for the girls to play on. And, apple cider pops for free!

Doug has his sailboat in Fish Creek, so one afternoon we went on a sail around the peninsula for a few hours. The wind wasn't great in the beginning, but eventually we found some and got sailing pretty good. The girls enjoyed walking the gang-plank (me, not so much) and steering the boat with Dad.

Of course, campfires, s'mores, and popcorn (courtesy of Grandpa Dan) were also huge favorites every night. We were lucky to never get too much rain, despite some major storms in the area. 

On our last day, which was beautiful weather, we biked all the way into town where we enjoyed a picnic pizza lunch from Wild Tomato and homemade custard from the ever-popular shop there. A great way to end a solid few days. We all loved Door County and will definitely be back some day!
